20 Yard Roll-Off Dumpster
Room to Tackle Real Work
What is a 20 Yard Dumpster?
A 20 yard roll-off dumpster is the go-to choice when your project is more than a quick cleanout—and you’re generating real piles of debris—but you still don’t need a massive commercial container. It gives you plenty of room for renovation waste, multi-room cleanouts, and bulky tear-outs, while staying practical for most driveways and job sites. Big capacity, smart fit.
Need a 20-yard delivered fast? We offer roll-off dumpster rentals from our Southport location and our Wilson location—choose the one closest to your project.
What a “20 Yard” Really Means
A 20-yard dumpster holds 20 cubic yards of debris—roughly 8 pickup-truck loads (depending on truck bed size and how you load). Our 20-yard roll-off dumpster dimensions are typically around 22' long × 8' wide × 4.5' high (exact measurements can vary slightly). Typical weight allowance is often 3–4 tons for mixed debris, with heavy materials handled under special “heavy debris” rules/limits depending on provider and local disposal regulations.

Best Uses for a 20 Yard Roll-Off
This size shines when you’ve got a project that’s messy, bulky, or both—but still contained:
- Double car garage clean out (big piles of storage, boxes, furniture, and bulky junk)
- Full kitchen/bath renovation (cabinets, countertops, tile, drywall, fixtures)
- Flooring removal (multiple rooms—especially if it’s carpet + padding + underlayment)
- Deck tear-outs (mid-size to larger decks, plus railings and boards)
- Small roofing job (a section of shingles or a smaller roof—confirm weight limits first)
- Yard debris and landscaping projects (branches, brush, storm cleanup)
- Small concrete project (concrete may require a separate container depending on volume/weight)
- Heavier material jobs (brick/dirt/concrete)—when approved and loaded correctly (more on that below)
Loading Tips That Save You Money (and Headaches)
A 20-yarder gives you more breathing room, but it can still disappear fast once you start tossing bulky demo debris and awkward items.
- Break down bulky materials (cabinets, boxes, furniture) so you don’t waste air space.
- Load flat and even. “Mountain peaks” are how you end up with a pickup problem.
- Don’t load above the rim. If it can’t be tarped safely, it may not be hauled.
- For heavy debris (concrete, dirt, brick): keep it level, don’t overfill, and confirm weight rules up front—heavy material hits limits fast.
No-Go Items (Prohibited Materials)
To keep pickup smooth (and avoid extra fees or rejected loads), do not place the following in your roll-off dumpster. Restrictions can vary by landfill and local regulations—when in doubt, ask before you toss.
- Tires
- Batteries (all types)
- Asbestos or asbestos-containing materials
- Propane tanks (and other pressurized cylinders)
- Fluorescent tubes / bulbs
- Herbicides or pesticides
- Paint & paint thinner (dry/empty cans only — no liquids)
- Liquids of any kind, including solvents, freon, or chemicals
- Biohazard or medical waste
- Equipment containing gas or oil (e.g., lawnmowers, chainsaws)
- White goods / appliances (Freon)
Heavy Debris Note
-
Concrete should be placed in a separate container. Even small amounts can exceed weight limits fast, so we’ll set you up with the right “heavy debris” option.
Placement Requirements (Driveway-Friendly, But It Still Needs Space)
Most customers place their dumpster in the driveway, which is usually the easiest spot for delivery and pickup. Just make sure the surface is solid and stable enough to handle the weight of the truck and a fully loaded container—heavy debris can crack asphalt, chip concrete, or leave marks.
If you’d rather place the dumpster on the lawn, we can do that too, but keep in mind it may leave ruts, compact the ground, or damage grass, especially after rain or with heavier loads.
Clearance & Access
Before delivery, please confirm:
- At least 25 feet of overhead clearance
- A clear path free of tree limbs, power lines, roof overhangs, carports, or low-hanging cables
- Enough space for the truck to safely back in and drop the container
Damage Disclaimer
While we’ll do our best to place the dumpster carefully, we are not responsible for damage to driveways, curbs, walkways, grass, overhanging limbs, or power lines caused by delivery, pickup, or the weight of the dumpster and its contents.
Frequently Asked Questions About 20 Yard Roll-Off Dumpsters
Renting a dumpster shouldn’t feel complicated—but a few common questions always come up. Below, we’ve answered the most frequent things customers ask about 20 yard roll-off dumpsters, from sizing and weight limits to rental timelines and pickup. If you don’t see your question here, just reach out and we’ll be happy to help.
Is a 20 yard dumpster “small”?
A 20 yard dumpster is considered a large residential roll-off. It offers significantly more capacity than smaller sizes and is ideal for major cleanouts and renovation projects, while still fitting in most driveways and standard job sites.
How long can I keep it?
Rental periods vary. The best move is to pick a delivery day that matches your project schedule so you’re not paying for idle time. Fill out a contact form or give us a call at (910) 899-6133.
Should I choose a bigger size “just in case”?
If you’re on the fence, sizing up can sometimes save you money by avoiding a second haul. That said, a 20 yard dumpster is often the sweet spot for larger projects—big enough to handle serious debris without stepping up to an oversized commercial container.
Can I use this dumpster for concrete?
Yes. We use 15-yard and 20-yard dumpsters for heavy materials like dirt, concrete and shingles. The dumpster should not be filled more than 1/2 full with heavy materials. Loading heavy materials alongside other debris may result in additional charges due to excess weight. Please call us for more details. Any overweight penalties due to overloading are the customer’s responsibility.
